The Wilco Welding Program is intended to prepare students for the requirements of an entry-level welding technician or apprenticeship in the Skilled Trades. Students will be oriented to a career pathway and begin developing Workplace Skills, Worksite Safety, Technical Knowledge, and Hands-On practice. Upon completion of the Program, a graduate should be able to obtain an apprenticeship or entry-level position in a Manufacturing, Fabrication or Building Trades sector. In order to prepare students for their role as a Welding Technician they will participate in in-depth classroom discussions of topics such as: OSHA Safety Standards, Welding Terminology, Precision Measurements, Welding Symbols & Blueprint Reading, Industry Codes & Documents, Welding Equipment, Welding Theory as well as Workplace skills like Continuing Education/Professional Development, Resume development, Job Searches and Interview Practices. Students will also participate in Shop Activities where they will learn how to use hand & power tools and welding equipment. Our Lab Curriculum will cover shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Oxy/Fuel Cutting (OFC), Plasma Arc Cutting (PAC) and Air/Carbon Arc Gouging (CAG-A)
Students will learn to be a combination welder and work toward earning Dual credit at Joliet Junior College. This is a college-level class, with college-level coursework. This is a very detail-oriented, dangerous class/job, that requires fine motor skills, the ability to follow verbal and written directions with distractions, and the ability to work alone or in a group.
The student’s ability to operate, adjust, and safely control power sources and gas equipment is essential. The students will learn to perform welds on Carbon Steel in the Flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions with SMAW & GMAW Welding Processes (Stick & Mig).
They will also learn OFC - Oxyfuel gas cutting, PAC - plasma arc cutting, and CAC-G - Carbon arc gauging Equipment, setup, and usage. Blueprint reading and the use of weld symbols are also stressed.
